Inspection of hibernation sites in the Romincka Forest Landscape Park in 2021

Despite the delay of this year's spring, at the end of March, monitoring of the winter quarters for amphibians built under the project began. The inspection covered 12 structures located in the Romincka Forest Landscape Park and the Romincka Forest Natura 2000 area.

The monitoring consisted in constructing a temporary fence around each wintering site, consisting of mounting posts, to which a barrier made of dense weave geotextile was mounted. On the inner side of the hibernation site, buckets were dug, which were a trap for the amphibians leaving the hibernation site. During the period of over a month, the traps were checked every day, and the caught animals - after determining the species and possibly age and sex - were released on the outer side of the fence.

This year, hibernation sites were used by 167 individuals belonging to six species. The most common ones were the gray toad Bufo bufo and the brown frogs: the moor frog Rana arvalis and the grass frog Rana temporaria. What makes as especially happy is the presence of the fire-bellied toad Bombina bombina in hibernation sites, which is the main subject of protection in the project.

The results of monitoring of passages for amphibians and reptiles in Prawdów and Kosewo - 2021.

Thanks to the use of camera traps, it was possible to monitor the use of the passages for amphibians and reptiles built under the project in 2019.

Preliminary data indicate that the passages were used very intensively by all groups of animals, mainly mammals and amphibians, less frequently reptiles, all year round - also in winter.

On May 17, 2021, an attempt was noted of European pond turtle to pass through the crossing in Prawdowo. The specimen entered and retreated from the tunnel for unknown reasons, but around noon the turtle crossing the road in another tunnel under the road was recorded, most likely the same specimen.

Another example of the use of modern technologies was the use of a drone for photos of the pond turtle breeding ground in Cudnochy. It turned out that turtles are large enough animals to be tracked from a drone.
