The project covers almost all amphibians species found in north-eastern Poland:

  • code 1188 European fire-bellied toad Bombina bombina - species included in Appendix II and IV of the Habitats Directive, on the IUCN Red List and the Polish Red List, as well as in the Annex II of the Bern Convention;
    subject to strict protection (protective actions planned: C.1, C.2, C.3, C.4);
  • European common spadefoot Pelobates fuscus - species included in Appendix IV of the Habitats Directive and on the IUCN Red List; subject to strict protection (protective actions planned: C.1, C.2, C.3, C.4);
  • Natterjack toad Epidalea calamita, formerly Bufo calamita - species included in Appendix IV of the Habitats Directive and the IUCN Red List; subject to strict protection (protective actions planned: C.1, C.2., C.3, C.4);
  • European green toad Pseudepidalea viridis syn. Bufo viridis - species included in Appendix IV of the Habitats Directive and the IUCN Red List; subject to strict protection (protective actions planned: C.1, C.2., C.3, C.4);
  • Common toad Bufo bufo - species included on the IUCN Red List; subject to strict protection (protective actions planned: CC.1, C.2., C.3, C.4);
  • European tree frog Hyla arborea - species included in Appendix IV of the Habitats Directive and on the IUCN Red List; subject to strict protection (protective actions planned: C.1, C.2., C.3, C.4);
  • Moor frog Rana arvalis - species included in Appendix IV and V of the Habitats Directive and on the IUCN Red List; subject to strict protection (protective actions planned: C.1, C.2., C.3, C.4);
  • Common frog Rana temporaria - species included on the IUCN Red List; subject to strict protection (protective actions planned: C.1, C.2., C.3, C.4);
  • Pool frog Pelophylax lessonae syn. Rana lessonae - species included in Appendix IV of the Habitats Directive and the IUCN Red List; subject to strict protection (protective actions planned: C.1, C.2., C.3, C.4);
  • Common water frog Pelophylax esculentus syn. Rana esculenta - species included in Appendix V of the Habitats Directive and the IUCN Red List; subject to strict protection (protective actions planned: C.1, C.2., C.3, C.4);
  • code 1166 Northern crested newt Triturus cristatus - species included in Appendix II and IV of the Habitats Directive, on the IUCN Red List and the Polish Red List, with a status of lower-risk species, the Polish Red Book and Appendix II of the Bern Convention; subject to strict protection (protective actions planned: C.1, C.2., C.3, C.4);
  • Smooth newt Lissotriton vulgaris, formerly Triturus vulgaris - species included on the IUCN Red List; subject to strict protection (protective actions planned: C.1, C.2., C.3, C.4).

Ostoja Wigierska - 12 amphibians specis can be found here; among others 2 species mentioned in Appendix II: European fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina) - code 118, Northern crested newt (Triturus cristatus) - code 1166, while other important amphibian species occurring in this area are: European common spadefoot (Pelobates fuscus), Natterjack toad (Epidalea calamita , before Bufo calamita), European green toad (Pseudepidalea viridis before Bufo), Common toad (Bufo bufo), European tree frog (Hyla arborea), Moor frog (Rana arvalis), Common frog (Rana temporaria), Pool frog (Pelophylax lessonae before Rana lessonae), Common water frog (Pelophylax esculentus, before Rana esculenta), Smooth newt (Lissotriton vulgaris, formerly Triturus vulgaris). It is planned to restore 3 water reservoirs, as breeding places for numerous amphibians species in the area of Ostoja Wigireska. Residual tanks, shallowed and heavily overgrown are located in open fields and meadows - these are the areas located in the hilly moraine belt.

Romincka Forest - 10 species of amphibians can be found her; amphibians listed in App. II of the Habitats Directive are two species: European fire-bellied toad ( Bombina bombina) - code 1188, Northern crested newt (Triturus cristatus) - Code 1166, while other important species of amphibians occurring in this area are: European common spadefoot (Pelobates fuscus), Common toad (Bufo bufo) , the European tree frog (Hyla arborea), Moor frog (Rana arvalis), Common frog (Rana temporaria), Pool frog (Pelophylax lessonae before Rana lessonae), Common water frog (Pelophylax esculentus, before Rana esculenta), Smooth newt (Lissotriton vulgaris, formerly Triturus vulgaris). The Romincka Forest's area on which some of the tasks are planned to be carried out, are the forest habitats, with numerous swamps, ditches and watercourses. For these habitats and the plants and animals living in those habitats it is very important to maintain an appropriate level of surface water and groundwater.

Ostoja Suwalska - 9 species of amphibians can be found here; amphibians listed in Appendix II of HD are two species: European fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina) - code 1188, Northern crested newt (Triturus cristatus) - Code 1166, while other important species of amphibians occurring in this area are: European common spadefoot (Pelobates fuscus), Common toad (Bufo bufo) , the European tree frog (Hyla arborea), Moor frog (Rana arvalis), Common frog (Rana temporaria), Pool frog (Pelophylax lessonae before Rana lessonae), Smooth newt ( Lissotriton vulgaris formerly Triturus vulgaris).

The area where it is planned to extend the existing system of culverts for amphibians by several new tunnels, is located in the northern part, between the Perty lake and backwaters of Lake Przechodnie. These are open areas (wet meadows and marshes), with fragments of alder stands, through which the watercourse runs, connecting the two lakes, and between them there is a road linking the localities of Sidory and Smolniki.

Narew Marshes - there are 12 species of amphibians here; amphibians listed in Appendix II of HD include: European fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina) - code 1188, Northern crested newt (Triturus cristatus) - Code 1166, while other important species of amphibians occurring in this area are: European common spadefoot (Pelobates fuscus), Natterjack toad (Epidalea calamita, formerly Bufo calamita), European green toad (Pseudepidalea viridis formerly Bufo viridis), Common toad (Bufo bufo) , the European tree frog (Hyla arborea), Moor frog (Rana arvalis), Common frog (Rana temporaria), Pool frog (Pelophylax lessonae formerly Rana lessonae), Common water frog ( Pelophylax esculentus, before Rana esculenta), Smooth newt (Lissotriton vulgaris formerly Triturus vulgaris).

The area covered by the project is located in a swampy, peat-filled valley of the Narew. The river forms a rich network of river beds, and a small drop, slow current of the river and peat covered area all contribute to the characteristic water-swampy valley environment with long-lasting high water level. The valley is crossed by the road connecting Białystok and Wysokie Mazowieckie localities.
